Day 26

Caleb grabbed onto a clump of reeds growing on the shoreline and pulled himself out of the brown water. Other than the area around the waterfall, the lake was mostly stagnant, more of a swamp really.

As soon as he was done picking off the leeches that had attached themselves to his skin during his time in the water, he sat on a dry patch of thin grass, wrapped his arms around his knees and just stared at his feet.

Kai made his way out of the lake by grabbing onto the same reeds Caleb had used, and then collapsed on his back, chest heaving from the exertion. Kai wheezed between breaths, "Thank you for saving my life yet again Caleb; I hope to be able to repay the debt someday."

Caleb sat silent for a few moments, then said, "She's dead."
