Kai pulled his gaze away from the pitch black void below and stared at Caleb's hand. Why was he so frightened? He'd never had a fear of heights before, and Caleb had just crossed the bridge without any problems. Mustering all his resolve, he slowly peeled his hand off the railing and desperately grasped Caleb's outstretched limb.
Caleb pulled Kai off the bridge and onto solid ground once more, and the man's sigh of relief was quite audible. Kai sat on the floor, panting like a man who'd just come up for air after being under water for several minutes.
Caleb watched Kai recover and said, "Now you know why people believe strange things about the crack in the earth."
Kai looked up at Caleb with bloodshot eyes and said with a tone of sudden realization, "Mr. Caleb, it seems we've found our portal."
