They walked out into the courtyard and the crisp cold air bit into their faces heightening the sense of impending danger. The nobleman from the previous night were assembled in the courtyard; apparently news of their offer had spread quickly. After a frustrating series of questions, warnings, advice and heated argument, Kai and Caleb were finally allowed to set off back into the forest.
When they stepped out through the small door in the large gate, Kai turned to Caleb and whispered, "You're sure about this, right?"
Caleb answered, "We have the artifact, we can use that to our advantage."
Kai took a deep breath, steeling himself for the grim task ahead. He looked over at Caleb, seeing determination and resolve, which somehow soothed his concerns and focused his own emotions.
As the compact dirt and open sky gave way to the softer earth and canopy of the forest Kai turned to Caleb and said, "Now what?"
